Jahncke Photograph Collection

Dating from 1901-1919, this photograph collection primarily relates to the Jahncke Shipbuilding Corporation in Madisonville,Louisiana.  The Jahncke Shipyard began operations just before World War I in 1917 and closed around 1970.  Shipyard workers built, operated, and repaired boats and dredges.  During World War I, Jahncke Shipyard employed about 2,200 men who built large wooden ships that measured 270 feet in length and weighed around 3,500 tons.

The Jahncke Shipyard was located on the current location of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum.

This online collection features photographs from the Jahncke Shipyard Collection, housed at the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University.  The photographs were printed from glass plate negatives donated by Herb and Steve Jahncke.  If you would like to see more, please contact us.
